Although we’ve dabbled in English-style beers in the past, Scratch #538 Burton Ale is a first for us. Suggested by brewer Jeremy Barr, this “brewer’s choice” limited R&D batch represents our take on the little-known dark, strong English ale. The recipe begins with a single malt variety – Pearl – made from a traditional English barley known for its bready flavor. Whole leaf Bravo hops add a touch of fruity and floral notes, and Demerara sugar bolsters the ale’s sweetness. We use an English ale yeast strain to accentuate the malt character, adding subtle fruity esters and complexity to the finished beer’s flavor and aroma.
